Various Branches in Indian Air Forces

How a Graduate can Join Indian Air Force as an Officer

If you are a graduate and wanted to join Indian Air Force as an Officer then you have three options as mentioned below

i : CDSE – Combined Defence Service Examinations – Entry for Men Only

This exam is conducted by UPSC Union Public Service Commission and after that you have to clear the SSB i.e Service Selection Board. This entrance is only for the Men and will get a Permanent Commission.

Eligibility Criteria – Below are the eligibility criteria for CDSE Exam to Join Indian Air Forces as an Officer for Graduates.

  • Age – 20-to 24 at the time of commencement of the course.
  • Nationality – Indian.
  • Maritial Status – Single
  • Gender – Men Only
  • Educational Qualification –

    A) Graduate three year course in any decipline from a recognise university (with Physics and Mathematics @ 10+2 )/ B.E or B.Tech (Four Year Course).
    B) Final Year Semester students are also eligible to apply, provided they have to produce the degree issued by the university as per the advertisement.
    C) No percentage bar for CDSE Entry.
  • Advertisement Schedule – Releases by UPSC in the months of Nov and August.
ii : NCC Special Entry

This is through NCC Air Squadrons /DG NCC. This means if you have C Certificate from NCC National Cadet Corps, you can apply for the Flying Branch of the Indian Air Force. Men and Women are eligible for this entrance only if they have a “C” certificate and both for permanent and short service commission.

Eligibility Criteria – Below are the eligibility criteria for NCC Entry to Join Indian Air Forces as an Officer for Graduates.

  • Age – 20-to 24 at the time of commencement of the course age relaxed up to 26 years for the candidates holding commercial Pilot Licence.
  • Nationality – Indian.
  • Marital Status – Single
  • Gender – Men Only
  • Educational Qualification –

    A) Graduate three-year course in any discipline from a recognized university (with Physics and Mathematics @ 10+2 )/ B.E or B.Tech (Four Year Course).
    B) Final Year Semester students are also eligible to apply, provided they have to produce the degree issued by the university as per the advertisement.
    C) Candidates who have cleared Section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.
    D) Final Year/semester students are also eligible to apply, provided they do not have any present backlogs at the time of AFSB Testing and produce a Degree certificate issued by the University as per the date stipulated in the advertisement.
    E) NCC Air Wing Senior Division ’C’ certificate and validity of the certificate would be two years before the date of commencement of the course.
  • Advertisement Schedule – Releases by IAF in the months of June and December.
iii : SSC (SHORT SERVICE COMMISSION ) ENTRY( FOR MEN AND WOMEN)

This is SSC Entry is done through AFCAT i.e Air Force Common Admission Test and both Men and Women can apply through this and this is a short service commission entry in the flying branch.

Eligibility Criteria – Below are the eligibility criteria for SSC AFCAT to Join Indian Air Forces as an Officer for Graduates.

Only for 14 Years no further extension.

  • Age – 20-to 24 at the time of commencement of the course age relaxed up to 26 years for the candidates holding commercial Pilot Licence.
  • Nationality – Indian.
  • Marital Status – Single
  • Gender – Men & Women
  • Educational Qualification –

    A) Graduate three-year course in any discipline from a recognized university (with Physics and Mathematics @ 10+2 )/ B.E or B.Tech (Four Year Course).
    B) Final Year Semester students are also eligible to apply, provided they have to produce the degree issued by the university as per the advertisement.

In this profile, you have to manage the people and material resources in Indian Air Forces.

General Eligibility Criteria for Ground Duty (Non-Technical) Branches

  • Age – 20 to 26 Years for Graduates and Post Graduates (at the time of commencement of course).
  • Marital Status – Candidates below the age of 25 years must be Unmarried.
  • Nationality – Indian.
  • Gender – Both men and women.
i) Administration Branch
  • Permanent Commission also Short Service Commission for Men and Women.
  • Air Traffic Controller – Involve in maintaining the flow of air crafts
    Flight Controller – Involves close contact between flights.
  • Educational Qualification
    Passed 10+2 and Graduate Degree (Minimum three year degree course) in any discipline from a recognized university with 60% marks or equivalent or cleared section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized university with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.
ii) Accounts Branch
  • Permanent Commission also Short Service Commission for Men and Women.
  • In this branch, you will be responsible for efficient management of funds of the Indian Air Force from time to time and sometimes also act as an auditor.
  • Eligibility Criteria –

(i) B.Com Degree (Min three years course).
(ii) Bachelor of Business Administration (with specialization in Finance)/ Bachelor of Management Studies (with specialization in Finance)/ Bachelor of Business Studies (with specialization in Finance)
(iii) Qualified CA/ CMA/ CS/ CFA.
(iv) B.Sc. with specialization in Finance.

iii) Logistic Branch
  • Permanent Commission (for Men)/Short Service Commission (for Men & Women)
  • Responsible for materials management of all Air Force resources. You would ensure efficient supervision of inventories, and involve in procurement processes of various ranges of equipment.
  • Educational Qualifications –

    Passed 10+2 and Graduate Degree(Min. 3 year Course) in any descipline from a recognise University or cleared section A & B
iv) Education Branch
  • Permanent Commission (for Men)/Short Service Commission (for Men & Women).
  • Educational Qualifications –

    Passed 10+2 and Post-Graduation with 50% in any discipline including integrated courses offering PG (Single degree without permission to exit and lateral entry) and with 60% marks in Graduation in any discipline.
v) METEOROLOGY BRANCH
  • Permanent Commission (for Men)/Short Service Commission (for Men & Women).
  • you would be involved in handling the latest satellite imagery and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, you would render specific advice to the operators on all aspects of weather.
  • Educational Qualification –

    Passe 10+2 and Post Graduation Degree in any science stream/Mathematics/Statistics/Geography/Computer Applications/Environmental Science/Applied Physics/Oceanography/Agricultural Meteorology/Ecology & Environment/Geo-physics/Environmental Biology. All candidates should have scored a minimum 50% marks in aggregate in all papers of Post Graduation put together (provided Maths & Physics were studied at Graduation level with a minimum of 55% marks in both).
