History of Buddhist Site Kushinagar

Kushinagar earlier pre-Buddha period known as Kusavati and Kushinara in the post-Buddha period. It was the capital of Mallas, one of the sixteen mahajanpads of India in the 6th century BCE, from then till pre-independence Kushinagar came in many rulers and administration. After independence in 1994 Kushinagar was designated as a district by Uttar Pradesh Government, which help in getting more attention and developments.

Importance of Kushinagar

Kushinagar was the capital of Mallas in 6th BCE hence it is one of the most important places in India, its importance becomes more when lord Buddha has taken Mahaprinirvan here after spending some time. This makes one of the major reasons for its importance, also there is a sun temple of 3 BCE during Gupta’s reign and this temple is also mentioned in Skand Puran hence its also increases its importance.

Sun Temple in Kushinagar – This is one of the Oldest and important Sun Temple in India. This temple is situated 17 km to the east from the tehsil office Kasia, Kushinagar.
Kasia is a small town which is 3 km from Kushinagar.

1: Parinirvana Stupa (महापरिनिर्वाण स्तूप), Kushinagar

The Parinirvana Stupa(महापरिनिर्वाण स्तूप) in Kushinagar is said to be the death place of Buddha where he had taken the Mahaparinirvana(महापरिनिर्वाण). The present temple was built by the Government of India in 1956 celebrating the 2500th year of Mahaparinirvana(महापरिनिर्वाण).
In the temple, there is a sleeping statue of lord buddha inclining on the right side and in the direction of North to South. The statue is 6.1 meters long.

2: Matha Kuar Shrine, Kushinagar

Matha Kuar Shrine in Kushinagar is near Mahaparinirvana Sthal having a statue of Lord Buddha in a sitting style and built on a single stone back to the 10th century. The statue depicts the Buddha Bhumi Sparsh Mudra.

3: Ramabhar Stupa, Kushinagar

The Rambhar Stupa is a 15-meter height stupa and one of the major attractions in Kushinagar. The stupa is semi hemisphere structured and has some images and photos of Lord Buddha. The internal hall is maintained to be in silent mode due to its structure. The stupa is surrounded by green lush parks which makes it one of the most tourist places.

4: Buddhist Museum, Kushinagar

The Buddhist Museum is a nearby Thai Temple in Kushinagar. This museum enclosed the memory and lifestyle of a Buddhist monk, dresses, etc, and showed how and what the life of a Buddhist monk.

This Buddhist Museum also has some unearthed stone works, remains of the Mauryan era.
